When the software industry talks about "Smart Clients" it is usually not referring to how savvy the buyers of software products are.
A whole new wave of web experience is coming your way, sometime soon, in the form of the "Smart Client", a technology that allows the internet to move outside the confines of the browser, and provide user experiences much more akin to the most advanced application software, but available by clicking a single link in a browser.
For a few years now, software providers have been faced with a choice of making browser-based software that little or no installation on the user's computer, or advanced graphical application software, which has a much more powerful user interface, but would require a significant effort to download, install and deploy.
The new dawn of Smart Clients is set to cut furrows down the middle of this trade of, as users will be given the convenience of browser-based software, but with the power of installed applications.
You can experience this for yourself right now, by installing some aditional components on to your machine.
Although this may seem like a contradiction in terms, in order to facilitate the operation of Smart Clients, existing computers will need a few additional pieces of software on them. Microsoft will be building these in to future versions of Windows, so in future this will not be necessary.
